Teacher Tasks and Procedures

Procedures for teacher:
•Research web sites that will be useful to students.
•Create a web links page for the students to use as a starting point.
•Create PowerPoint slides as templates for students to use.
•Create an example movie (which will be made into a podcast format later).
•Prepare a rubric.
•Prepare a handout for students to use during the project.
•Have ready a Jeopardy game template in which the students can add their questions.

Student Tasks and Procedures

Student Tasks:

In this project you will:
•use statistical data from South American countries and make comparisons.
•put this data into a spreadsheet and create graphs with explanations of the graph.
•brainstorm a plan to create a podcast.
•create a script for your podcast
•use video and audio recording equipment to create a podcast
•peer review the podcasts in the class


Procedure:
1.Receive a copy of the rubric for the project.
2.View the teacher example and rate it using the rubric. Discuss how the teacher example could have been better. (Be honest!)
3.Take the assigned country and begin researching the topics of Geography, Current Government, Economy (with graphical comparisons), Transnational Issues [called Beyond the Borders], and a Current Event. Keep track of your sources by writing down the page name and basic URL for web pages you use.
4.Use your notes (No copying directly from the internet!) to create a script for your presentation.
5.Narrow down the main ideas of your presentation and place them on the presentation PowerPoint slides. There should be one slide per section except the economy section where graphs can be on separate pages. Use of
6.Use the internet to download photos that you can use for your presentation. Be sure this is allowed by the site. Keep track of your sources (see #3 above)!
7.Use the voice recorder to record the parts of your script. Be sure to make small files by recording each section in different files. Members of your group should take turns reading parts of the script.
8.Your teacher will download your audio files for you to be able to use.
We are almost ready for iMovie!
9.Convert all your PowerPoint files to movie files. [This is done by going to the FILE menu and selecting MAKE MOVIE…]
10.Be sure that the CLIPS button is selected. Notice the open squares in iMovie at the top right. Click and drag your converted movie files, downloaded images, and audio files into iMovie.
There is a lot of help under the HELP menu, especially in the iMovie HD Getting Started file
11.Review the rubric to make sure you are pleased with your product.
12.After using iMovie and editing the video, audio, and any effects you add, use the SHARE menu to convert your file into a iPod compatible file.
13.Submit your questions for the Jeopardy game for your country.
14.Share your presentation with other groups. During this time they will use the rubric to score your project and you will do the same for others.

Grade 6 Standard Course of Study Goals for Students

  • The students will access statistical data from South American countries for the purpose of comparison. (SS 1.01, SS 1.02, SS 1.03, SS 6.01, SS 9.02, SS 11.01, SS 11.03)
  • The statistics will be put into a spreadsheet. (IS 4.07, IS 4.09)
  • The students will brainstorm a plan to create a podcast (CTS 1.03, CTS 2.06)
  • The students will use video and audio recording equipment to create a podcast. Editing skills will be employed to make the podcast concise and effective. Students will adhere to copyright laws. (IS 4.09, CTS 1.02, CTS 1.11, CTS 1.15)
  • Graphs will be created with the spreadsheet data. Student-generated written explanations will accompany the graphs (SS 1.01, SS 1.02, SS 1.03, IS 4.09, CTS 1.10, CTS 2.03, CTS 3.06, CTS 3.07, CTS 3.08)
  • Students will peer review the podcasts in the class (SS 1.01, SS 1.02, SS 1.03, IS 4.10, CTS 3.11, CTS 3.13)
